A 20ft container suits tools, equipment and household storage. A 40ft gives you more floor space; a High Cube adds height. Check the internal dimensions and door opening against what you need to store.

20ft, 40ft or High Cube?

Compare the space on your site, usable space inside and clear door opening. A 40ft High Cube adds height to a 40ft footprint; it does not add floor area.

Outside sizes follow ISO 668. Inside measurements, openings and rounded floor areas are Hapag-Lloyd fleet examples, not a guarantee for the unit offered. Insulation, partitions and fittings reduce usable space.

Measure the largest item together with its pallet, packing or handling equipment. Allow room to get it through the opening, place it inside and reach it later. A nominal 20ft or 40ft length alone does not tell you whether it will fit.

Used or one-trip?

Choose the condition for the job, then ask for recent photos of the actual unit.

Used, wind and watertight
For general dry storage. Expect cosmetic wear; inspect the roof, floor, seals and doors. Wind and watertight does not mean insulated.
Cargo-worthy
For a used container intended for transport. Ask your carrier to confirm the required inspection and documentation.
One-trip
Used for one cargo journey before sale. Usually a cleaner finish, with some handling marks possible.

Ask what the condition description includes: holes or patches, roof and wall corrosion, floor repairs, seals, locking bars and whether both doors operate. Model illustrations and grade labels do not replace current photos or an inspection of the selected unit.

Choose doors for the way you load

Standard end doors suit loading from one end. Different openings can make stock easier to reach, but require their own dimensions, placement space and quote.

Standard end doors
Plan the door end toward your loading area and leave room for the doors to swing. Check the actual clear opening and locking arrangements.
Double-door / tunnel
Doors at both ends provide two access points. Confirm that both ends will remain accessible after placement and that this is the model quoted.
Side-opening
Side access can suit long items or stock reached along the container. Ask for the clear side opening, door arrangement and room required to open it.
Insulation and other modifications
Specify shelving, vents, a lock box or a fitted insulated interior separately. Ask how each option changes the usable space, price and delivery lead time.

Explore side-opening containers or compare insulated sea cans. A standard dry container does not provide temperature-controlled storage.

What does a sea can cost delivered?

The container price is only one part of the total. Compare the same size and condition, with delivery and unloading to your address included.

Prepare the delivery and placement

Send access photos and the intended position before accepting delivery. The supplier must confirm a suitable truck, offloading method and the space needed to place your container.

  1. Mark the final position and which way the doors should face. Keep the loading area and door swing clear.
  2. Describe the access route: gate width, bends, slope, ground condition, overhead obstacles and available space for the truck. Ask for the clearance required by the actual delivery vehicle.
  3. Agree the bearing surface and supports with the supplier. Confirm who prepares them and how the unit will be levelled so the doors work correctly.
  4. Confirm tilt-bed, crane or other offloading in writing. Identify any separate lifting contractor, booking, site work or waiting charges.
  5. On arrival, check the unit number, condition and placement against the order. Open and close the doors before signing off delivery.

For a tight urban driveway or remote site, ask for an access review before booking. A container fitting in the planned footprint does not establish that a truck can reach and unload it.

Buying a sea can: common questions

Is a sea can the same as a shipping container?

Yes. In Canada, sea can, seacan and c-can are common names for a shipping container. The name does not specify its size, condition or insulation.

Can I buy a sea can for home storage?

Yes, provided the supplier serves your address and the site is suitable. Confirm placement rules with your municipality and arrange clear truck access before ordering.

Is delivery included in the model price?

Catalogue model prices are in CAD before sales taxes, delivery and unloading. Request the complete delivered total and confirm availability for your postal code.

Can I pick up a sea can from a depot?

Some suppliers offer depot pickup. Confirm the exact depot, loading arrangements and appointment, then arrange suitable transport and unloading equipment at your destination.
