Which container for building work, a house move, self-storage or a garden shed?

For household storage, compare four situations: renovation, a house move, longer-term storage and a garden shed or workshop. Rental can suit a temporary need; for repeated or longer use, compare the full costs of renting and buying.

How much does a container for home storage cost?

Canadian home-storage containers are available by quotation. Browse model sizes and request a total in CAD for your postal code, including applicable GST/HST and provincial taxes, delivery and unloading. This page has no verified price example specifically for household storage. See the Canadian container price guide for dated general purchase examples.

The Canadian catalogue lists fixed CAD container prices before tax and delivery. Ask for a written total that identifies applicable GST/HST and any provincial taxes, delivery and unloading. Tax treatment depends on the transaction and destination; no universal rate is calculated here.

Container storage for a house move: what should you budget?

For a house move or temporary storage, compare the rental charge, delivery, pickup and unloading over the same period. Ask whether transport with your belongings inside is offered; do not assume it is included in standard container rental.

Storage: at home or at a depot?

At your home, your belongings remain close at hand, but the container takes up space on your property and is delivered by truck. At a depot, nothing is delivered: you bring your belongings and access them during the site's opening hours. For long-term storage, compare with buying: compare the rental charges over your expected duration with the purchase price, transport, upkeep and any resale assumptions.

Should I buy a shipping container for storage at home?

To decide between renting and buying, compare the delivered purchase price with the total rental charges, delivery and pickup over your expected storage period. Request both quotes for the same size and address.

Redo the calculation with your own quotes: one for rental, one for purchase, for the same size, condition and address, over your short, likely and extended duration. Rent or buy: the calculation over your period.

How do I request a container quote for home delivery?

With ContainerFox, you describe your project once (rental or purchase, size, address, access) and request quotes for the container, delivery and unloading. The enquiry is free; you pay the chosen supplier directly.

The request is received by the ContainerFox team, who review it, may ask for clarification, and then search for suitable suppliers themselves. No number of responses is guaranteed.

For the same size and condition category, the displayed price differs from one seller to another: compare quotes on the same specification with ContainerFox, free of charge and with no obligation.

A difference between public offers is not a saving: only quotes drawn up on the same specification will tell you what you will pay.

How does delivery of a container to a private home work?

The price of delivery depends on the departure depot, delivery postal code, route, truck and unloading; for a private home, also have the truck access, gate, ground and space to unload checked before setting a date.

Apply the building code adopted by the province or territory and the local requirements. Obtain site-specific design and local approval; no national frost depth or generic corner-block foundation is assumed. Plan safe truck and lifting operations with the delivery team.

Do I need a permit for a backyard storage container?

Before delivery, check the site's zoning and intended use with the municipality or authority having jurisdiction. Describe the container's position, height, duration, foundations, utilities and access. Development approval and building permits are separate checks. Use the adopted provincial or territorial code and local bylaws; a small footprint, mobility or a shipping certificate does not establish an exemption.

Temporary use is not an automatic exemption. Explain the duration, intended use and any foundations or services to the local zoning and building authority. A separate home is not the same use as incidental domestic storage.

Check the building code adopted in your province or territory, municipal zoning and any applicable permit or inspection requirements. A container home, a backyard storage container and an accessory dwelling unit can follow different approval routes. Ask the local authority before ordering; no Canada-wide size or duration exemption is assumed.

How to insure and protect a container installed at home?

A closed container protects your belongings, but insurance does not automatically follow: ask your home insurer in writing whether it covers goods stored in a container on your land and, for rental, who insures the container itself.

Questions about containers for home storage

Can I rent a container for my home?
Yes, where the rental company serves your address and suitable delivery access is available. Ask for the rental period, billing interval, delivery and pickup charges in the quote. With ContainerFox, requesting a quote is free and without obligation.
Can you keep your furniture in a container during building work?
It can suit furniture storage if the location and use are permitted and the unit is suitable for the goods. Confirm local zoning and any permits before delivery. Keep furniture away from wet surfaces, allow safe access, manage condensation for the climate, and check insurance and the unit’s history and condition.
How long can I rent a container for home storage?
Each rental company sets a minimum rental period and a notice period. Ask for these to be specified in the quote, along with the price of an additional month and the pickup charges at the end of the rental.
Do you need to be present on the day the container is delivered?
It is preferable, or arrange for someone to represent you: you need to show the exact location, check the container’s condition on arrival and record any damage or discrepancies on the delivery note before signing it.
Does a private individual pay sales tax on a container?
Ask the seller for a written CAD quotation identifying GST/HST and any applicable provincial taxes, together with delivery and unloading. The treatment depends on the transaction, supplier and destination; this site does not determine a rate or exemption. Catalogue container prices exclude sales taxes, delivery and unloading. Consult CRA guidance and the relevant provincial tax authority; obtain the supplier’s confirmed tax treatment.
Does using ContainerFox cost more?
The service does not charge you anything. For a quote request, the requester pays nothing to the service and pays the supplier they choose directly. Businesses may pay the service to receive qualified quote requests. Like any commercial cost, this cost may be included in their price: that is why comparing several delivered prices, including sales tax, protects you. Nothing prevents you from contacting a rental company or a seller directly either.
What if I receive no quotes?
This can happen depending on the area and the project: no number of responses is guaranteed. Add detail to your request (rental or purchase, size, address, access and dates), or contact a company through the ContainerFox supplier directory.
Can a container be used as a garden shed or workshop?
Potentially, if the intended use and location are approved. A 20ft container offers 1,172.4 cu ft of interior space for a footprint of about 159.3 sq ft. Confirm zoning, setbacks and any development or building permits with the local authority. A workshop may also require occupancy, fire, ventilation, heating and electrical provisions under the code adopted for the site; have supports designed for the actual loads and ground conditions.
