Measure the opening · Canada guide
Will it fit through the container doors?
An item can fit inside a container yet fail to pass through its doors. Compare the packed object and its handling method with the actual opening.

Measure the loading orientation
Include pallets, skids, packaging and protruding parts. Identify anything that must remain upright. External width and roof height are not the door opening dimensions; obtain the proposed unit’s actual clear aperture.
The tool checks an upright rectangular cross-section against reference fleet dimensions. It subtracts your side and overhead allowances. Blank inputs stay unknown; zero deliberately models no allowance.
Compare sizes and check a door opening
Enter measurements in inches. Use a decimal point or comma, with up to three decimals. Write fractional inches as decimals, for example 0.125 for ⅛ in. A blank remains unknown. Enter 0 only for a known zero. The limit per field is 787.401 in. Item width and height must be greater than zero.
Changing units preserves the saved measurements. Converted input displays may be rounded; they replace the saved value only if you edit them. Blank or invalid entries stay unchanged.
Hapag-Lloyd 22 G1 fleet example. Confirm the specification of the actual unit.
| Size | Outside | Inside | Door |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft standard | 19 ft 10.5 in × 8 ft × 8 ft 6 in | 19 ft 4.3 in × 7 ft 8.6 in × 7 ft 10.3 in | 7 ft 8.1 in × 7 ft 6.2 in |
| 40ft standard | 40 ft × 8 ft × 8 ft 6 in | 39 ft 5.7 in × 7 ft 8.6 in × 7 ft 10.3 in | 7 ft 8.1 in × 7 ft 6.2 in |
| 40ft high cube | 40 ft × 8 ft × 9 ft 6 in | 39 ft 5.7 in × 7 ft 8.5 in × 8 ft 10.3 in | 7 ft 8.1 in × 8 ft 6.2 in |
The interior check uses the same upright orientation and side/top allowances. No longitudinal allowance is added. Exact equality leaves no reserve.
Upright rectangular cross-section only. No rotation, ramp, turning path, forklift, floor loading or lifting assessment. Zero spare clearance means an exact mathematical fit, not practical loading approval.

Keep the object, support and allowance separate
Enter the packed object's width and height in its intended loading orientation. Add a pallet or skid as support height only if it is not already included in the object's height. In this tool, the clearance is applied on each side and once above the load: it is not a total width allowance.
Illustrative calculation: the reference 20ft opening is 7 ft 8.1 in wide and 7 ft 6.2 in high. An object 7 ft 2.6 in wide and 6 ft 6.7 in high, on a 5.9 in support, with a chosen 0.8 in allowance on each side and above leaves 3.9 in spare width and 4.8 in spare height after those allowances. The chosen allowance illustrates the arithmetic; it is not a handling recommendation.
| Measurement | Include | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Packed object | Wrapping, handles, projecting parts and required upright orientation | Using the unpacked product dimensions |
| Support height | Pallet or skid not already counted in packed height | Counting the same pallet twice |
| Allowance | Each-side and overhead allowance suitable for the intended handling | Treating zero clearance as practical approval |
| Actual opening | Clear width and height of the offered unit | Substituting outside container dimensions |
Include the approach and equipment
A pallet jack, forklift, ramp or lifting frame changes the arrangement. Assess the threshold, ramp angle, turning space, mast height and floor loading with the handling provider. Geometric clearance does not approve a lifting or driving manoeuvre.
For daily access, consider the door swing, snow clearance and space to move goods after entry. A side-opening unit can suit a different routine, but its clear aperture and structure still need confirmation.
Resolve conflicts before ordering
If the reference check fails, discuss another orientation, dismantling, size or opening with the supplier. This calculator does not rotate objects or calculate their path. A passing result still needs confirmation against the actual unit and safe handling plan.
Check the route before, through and beyond the doors
Door clearance is one point along the route. An item that passes the opening may still be too long to position, turn or retrieve inside. Use the clear internal dimensions as a separate check, including linings, shelving and the space left for people or equipment.
- Before entry: approach width, turning room, ramp and equipment position.
- At entry: clear opening, threshold, door hardware and changes in load angle.
- Inside: full item length, manoeuvring space, floor suitability and final position.
- For a reefer: manufacturer loading-height and airflow limits as well as the door opening.
Questions before you choose
Is zero spare clearance acceptable?
It is an exact mathematical fit only. Tolerances, alignment and practical handling need an appropriate allowance.
Can the calculator check an item tilted through the door?
No. It checks an upright rectangular cross-section. A tilted or rotating movement requires the full item geometry, approach, equipment and a handling assessment.
Does High Cube also mean a wider door?
Do not infer width from the extra height. Check both dimensions on the actual unit; the reference High Cube model has a taller opening but the same door width as the standard examples.
