Where to buy a shipping container, and from whom?

There are three main buying options in Australia: a specialist supplier, a rental company selling units from its fleet, or a private seller. Use ContainerFox to prepare an enquiry covering the container, delivery and unloading.

Buy from a specialist supplier

Traders and resellers buy containers from shipping lines or manufacturers and resell them from port or inland depots, new, one-trip or used. Ask whether the quote is ex-depot or delivered, and confirm the actual dispatch address. A project in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Darwin needs its own transport quote; a business address alone does not establish the dispatch depot. In the ContainerFox directory, 35 businesses list used container sales and 35 new or one-trip container sales.

A rental company that also sells its fleet

Some companies rent and sell: they sell part of their rental fleet, often used. In the ContainerFox directory, 36 businesses list both container sales and rental. This can help you compare renting a container with buying one.

Private listing

For a private sale, verify the seller’s identity, ownership and right to sell, and get a written bill of sale. Business registration may not apply, and consumer protections can differ from a purchase from a business. Inspect the unit and agree transport, unloading and a traceable payment process before paying: buy from a listing or private seller.

Prepare comparable supplier quotes

Product models are for quotation. ContainerFox does not publish unverified Australian sale prices or promise stock. Use the directory to find suppliers and prepare one enquiry covering the container, delivery and unloading. The Australian price guide provides dated purchase-price examples from selected regional suppliers. Compare current written quotations for your actual destination. You contract directly with the supplier you choose. Prepare comparable quotations.

The ContainerFox directory lists 40 businesses that list container sales, with listed locations across 8 states and territories, with published business details and location evidence from official supplier websites; listing is not confirmation of registration or licensing. Evidence dates are retained individually in each supplier profile. 40 areas have their own page.

Up to 12 states and territories, ordered by the number of companies mentioning sales. A company with documented locations in several states counts in each one. These counts describe business locations, not delivery coverage. Linked directory selections also identify advertised service coverage; confirm the supplying yard for your postcode.

These tables are a starting selection, not a complete list or a stock check. Browse all states and territories and their listed city markets, or search all companies mentioning container sales.

A company listed in the directory does not automatically receive your request. An administrative address is neither a depot nor stock: have the departure location of the proposed unit confirmed.

Where are shipping container depots located?

Specialist sellers sell from port or inland depots, and it is the distance between that depot and your site that affects the delivered price: always ask for the exact depot address before comparing two quotes.

In the ContainerFox directory, the two areas that list the most companies in the container sector are “Western Australia” (13 listed companies, including 12 that list sales) and “New South Wales” (12 listed companies, including 11 that list sales). These are establishments (head office or branch), not depots: ask to confirm the departure location of the unit offered.

A departure location in a directory listing does not confirm stock or collection arrangements. A registered office or business address is not necessarily a depot open to the public. Before arranging collection, confirm the address, loading conditions and availability of the chosen unit.

How to check a container seller before paying?

Before paying, check these six points: the company, the depot, the actual container, the written terms, the payment arrangements and the complete price. Ask the supplier to confirm any price example against your own requirements.

  1. The company. Match the legal seller name on the website, quotation, payment details and invoice. Check ABN Lookup for the legal entity and GST status, and ASIC registers where appropriate. Match that identity to independently obtained supplier contact and payment details; a copied valid ABN is not proof that a website or payee is genuine. A directory listing does not imply a registry match or stock.
  2. The depot. A real address where the unit can be viewed, and a seller who accepts a visit. A seller who refuses any visit or provides no address should make you stop.
  3. The actual container. Recent photos of the unit offered, not a catalogue model: all four sides, the floor, the doors and the container number.
  4. The written terms. A quote or purchase order specifying the size, stated condition, departure location, delivery, unloading and the delivery lead time proposed by the seller.
  5. Payment. No full advance payment to a seller you do not know. Pay the company that invoices you, into an account in its name: a transfer requested to a third-party account should make you stop.
  6. The price. A price far below comparable written offers for the same size and condition warrants extra checks. The dated regional examples in our guide are not a fraud threshold, and do not establish current stock or an available discount: Australian price examples and delivered-quote checklist.

Doubts about a website or an offer?

After suspected fraud, contact your financial institution and local police and report the incident to Scamwatch. For a consumer dispute, contact the relevant state or local consumer affairs office. Fraud reporting and consumer dispute assistance serve different purposes.

Directory profiles describe published business information. This edition does not claim a business registry match. A listing is not accreditation, stock confirmation or a recommendation. Verify the contracting seller independently before paying.

Should you buy from the nearest depot or at the lowest displayed price?

Choose on delivered price, not displayed price: a closer depot can offset a higher displayed price, and only a request that specifies your postcode allows you to compare the delivered and unloaded totals.

Use the Australian price examples and delivered-price checklist, and prepare a complete delivered quotation using the ContainerFox enquiry service. The examples are regional price checks, not a national average; the scope and price basis of each entry must be retained. Compare actual quotations in AUD for the same unit specification and destination.

How to buy a shipping container delivered without calling every seller?

Have the container, its delivery and unloading quoted through a single free, no-obligation ContainerFox request, stating the specification, condition, quantity, postcode and site access, then buy directly from the supplier you choose.

  1. Describe the container: size (20ft or 40ft, standard or High Cube), condition (new, one-trip or used) and quantity.
  2. State the delivery postcode, the site access and the unloading method you have available.
  3. Who responds. Suppliers consulted by the ContainerFox team, who review each request. The number of responses is not set in advance: a request may receive none.
  4. Compare quotes on the delivered and unloaded total including applicable GST, then sign and pay the supplier you choose directly.

For a quote request, the requester pays nothing to the service and pays the supplier they choose directly. Product models are for quotation. ContainerFox does not publish unverified Australian sale prices or promise stock. Details: how the service works and fees.

ContainerFox recommendation

Do not pay for a container without comparing at least one second delivered price for the same specification and the same condition category. The request is free and without obligation.

Frequently asked questions about buying a shipping container

What is the best place to buy a shipping container?
There is no single one: the right place depends on your use (storage, construction site, transport, conversion) and on the distance between the departure depot and your site. So compare delivered prices, not displayed prices: a ContainerFox request, free and without obligation, allows you to request a quotation for the container, its delivery and its unloading.
Can you collect a container from the depot yourself?
Yes, when the seller offers it, which their listing or quote must specify. You then need a vehicle and lifting equipment suitable for loading and unloading a container: compare this cost with that of the delivery offered by the seller.
Does a very low price necessarily hide a scam?
No, but it justifies enhanced checks. If the price is unusually low, insist on an inspection, photos of the unit with its number, a quote identifying the seller and payment into a matching account.
What documents should you ask for before buying a container?
A written quote in the company’s name, with its company name and business identifier where provided, checked against the appropriate registry; the unit description (size, stated condition, container number, recent photos); the departure depot address; delivery, unloading and payment terms; then an invoice in the same name. For maritime transport, also ask for the CSC plate and its examination history, to be checked by your transport provider.
What does the presence of a company in the ContainerFox directory mean?
Its listing is based on published information from the supplier’s official website, including published locations and services. Evidence dates are retained individually in each supplier profile. This edition does not claim that the supplier has been matched to an Australian registry. A listing is neither an endorsement nor proof of stock, delivery coverage or a commercial relationship. Verify the contracting seller independently before paying.
Do the companies in the directory receive my quote request?
Not automatically. The request is received by the ContainerFox team, who review it, may ask for clarification, and then search for suitable suppliers themselves. No number of responses is guaranteed. Nothing prevents you from also contacting a company in the directory directly.
