Federal construction sanitation rule 29 CFR 1926.51 includes Table D-1 and specific exceptions. Confirm the governing rule, fixture types and workforce before calculating a toilet count. A building label or count does not certify compliance. Toilets: required type and count, privacy, accessibility, siting and safe access. Washing: required water supply, temperature, soap and hygienic drying. Showers/decontamination: assess the tasks and hazardous substances involved. Drinking: potable water source, protection, replenishment and hygienic use. Changing/storage: workwear, wet gear, privacy and separate contaminated items. Meals/breaks: peak users, furniture, shelter, heating/cooling and ventilation needed for the project. Do not treat a heated break trailer or kitchen as a universal federal construction requirement. No eating or drinking in toilet rooms or areas exposed to toxic materials; check additional applicable rules. Cleaning, sanitary waste, tank servicing and records where required.
