Compare the cooling duty and site arrangement before the enclosure price. A reefer and an installed cold room can suit different routines.

## Define the product and operating pattern

State temperature range, incoming product temperature, daily throughput, packaging and door-opening pattern. Separate holding chilled goods from cooling warm deliveries.

Ask suppliers to work from the same brief. Cooling capacity is not average electrical consumption, and neither figure guarantees performance for every loading pattern.

## Compare the actual cold-storage system

The enclosure name does not define the cooling plant or installation scope. An insulated non-operating container provides no active cooling unless a suitable system is added and commissioned.

| Option | What to establish | Site interface to include |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Operating reefer container | Actual model, refrigeration duty and usable loading space | Support, delivery, compatible power, loading access and heat-rejection clearance |
| Container converted for cold storage | Insulated assembly, selected cooling plant and finished clear space | Conversion scope, connections and commissioning responsibilities |
| Modular walk-in cold room | Room layout, panels, floor and plant sized for the duty | Suitable location, installation work, services and surrounding access |
| Insulated non-operating container | Condition and insulation scope; no active cooling assumed | Any separate refrigeration design and installation required for the proposed use |

## Compare the installation boundary

A container enclosure still needs support, delivery equipment, power and access. A cold room may need a suitable surrounding building, floor, drainage and more on-site work. Assign responsibility for each interface.

Compare usable space, pallet handling, thresholds, lighting, emergency arrangements and cleaning access. Confirm the local approval requirements for the intended installation.

## Test the everyday route, not just the floor plan

An indoor producer receiving small loads frequently may prioritize short carrying routes and a door arrangement within the existing building. A seasonal operation with a suitable yard may investigate a delivered reefer. Neither example establishes feasibility or the cheaper choice; both still need a duty, access and service assessment.

Check the packed goods, handling equipment, ramp or threshold, door-opening routine and safe exit arrangement. Identify where heat is rejected, any noise constraints and how technicians reach the equipment without blocking production.

## Include energy and the response plan

Price equipment, transport, installation, commissioning, service and eventual removal in CAD. Use measured consumption or an explicit operating assumption with your own tariff; maximum nameplate demand is not an average bill.

Agree alarm response, breakdown attendance and the procedure for goods after a temperature excursion. For activities covered by the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, the federal preventive-control requirements include appropriate temperature and humidity controls. Provincial or territorial food rules and local public-health requirements may also apply; a local food business is not automatically subject to every federal licensing or written-plan requirement. In Quebec, confirm the applicable MAPAQ requirements for the food and activity.

## Agree the handover before putting goods inside

Ask for commissioning and operating instructions for the actual installation and duty. Assign monitoring, routine checks, maintenance and out-of-hours response to named roles. A display reaching its set point without the proposed load does not establish performance through the working day.

- Confirm temperature settings in Celsius and the monitoring arrangement.
- Demonstrate doors, controls and the specified emergency arrangements.
- Record the service contact, response terms and plan for affected goods.
- Compare rental minimums, extensions, return charges and deposits separately from equipment and installation.
- Keep manuals, commissioning records and unresolved work together.

## Questions before you choose

### Is a container always cheaper?

No. Compare real quotations for equivalent duty, installation, operating period, service and removal.

### Can an insulated container replace a running cold room?

Insulation alone does not maintain a controlled temperature indefinitely. Establish whether active refrigeration is present and suitable for the goods, ambient conditions and operating pattern.

### Can the electrical bill be calculated from cooling capacity?

No. Cooling output and electrical consumption are different quantities. Use consumption evidence or an explicit average-power assumption with your own electricity tariff.

## Turn the checks into a clear quote request

Compare the equipment, delivery and services for your project. ContainerFox helps prepare your request; a directory listing does not mean that a business is a partner or will receive it.
